URBANSCAPES:

CONSIDERING Decay and Renewal

My current series of paintings and drawings, Urbanscapes, explores the complex relationship between decay and renewal within the built environment. Rooted in the observation of urban architecture and its surrounding elements, these works are not simply depictions of place, but rather visual essays on impermanence, memory, and resilience.

Through the lens of architectural form—faded facades, weathered signage, fractured pavement, and the subtle encroachments of nature—I seek to document the passage of time as it inscribes itself onto the urban fabric. These structures, often overlooked in daily life, bear silent witness to cycles of growth, neglect, and transformation. In their surfaces and silences, there is both history and potential.

The intention behind Urbanscapes is to elevate the commonplace. I aim to draw attention to those subjects typically relegated to the periphery of perception—abandoned storefronts, alleys, infrastructure—inviting viewers to reconsider the aesthetic and emotional value of these spaces. What might appear derelict at first glance can reveal unexpected beauty, quiet dignity, and an enduring sense of place.

By working primarily in watercolor and drawing media, I embrace a process that mirrors the fragility and fluidity of my subject matter. The translucent layers and unpredictability of these materials echo the tension between erosion and preservation—between what is lost and what remains.

Ultimately, Urbanscapes is a call to mindfulness, encouraging a more nuanced engagement with the urban environment and an appreciation for the overlooked narratives embedded within it.

Stephen C Kuhlman

artist profile

From the observations of his earliest teachers to his family and friends, it was always a foregone conclusion that Steve would pursue visual arts. He received a BFA degree in painting from Ohio University and later an Associate degree in Commercial Art/Advertising.

In the late 70s, while continuing to paint, Kuhlman began his career in advertising as an art director for a small Louisville, Kentucky advertising agency. As the agency grew and expanded, he held positions in creative services and management. During his thirty years in the business—and ultimately part ownership—the agency grew from a small local firm to a highly regarded creative agency serving regional and national clients.

Artists who influenced Kuhlman’s work include Andrew Wyeth, with his restrained color palette and attention to detail; Richard Diebenkorn, with his abstract compositions in the “Ocean Park” series; as well as realist painters from the late 60s and early 70s. Closer to home, Kuhlman studied with and was inspired by Homer Hacker, a noted watercolorist and AWS member.

Kuhlman returned full time to his fine arts roots a few years ago with the opening of his studio in downtown Louisville, where he regularly spends five days a week working in his preferred medium of watercolor.

Kuhlman’s highly awarded work has appeared in regional and national exhibitions and is held in private and corporate collections.
